United Nations Human Rights Committee has called on the Maldives to step up efforts to curb the trafficking in migrants from neighbouring countries for labour and sexual exploitation. In a report issued by the Committee Thursday, while noting that trafficking is prohibited by the Maldives’ constitution, expressed concern that no legislation has yet been enacted to prevent and protect against trafficking in persons.
The Committee further noted the lack of statistical data on the number of trafficked persons, the investigations conducted, the number of prosecutions and convictions, and the protective measures put in place, as well as the absence of a strategy to combat trafficking.
As a remedy the report while calling on the relevant authorities to expedite the Bill prohibiting and punishing all forms of trafficking in persons, stressed on the importance of establishing means to provide protective measures, in particular shelters, as well as rehabilitation and compensation to victims of trafficking.
In addition, the Committee urged the Maldives to investigate incidences of trafficking, prosecute those responsible and adopt an Action Plan on human trafficking.
Government recently admitted that large numbers of illegal immigrants are currently living throughout the Maldives.
