MDP concerned over Ali Waheed Criminal Court summon

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed concern over MDP deputy Parliamentary group leader and Thoddoo constituency MP Ali Waheed being summoned to the Criminal Court on Sunday. In a press statement by the party on Saturday night, the party stated that it is aware that the charges being pressed against Ali Waheed is due to an incident in 2010 and stated that the issue is “archaic”.

“While paying no attention to the constitutional principles which state that a delay in providing justice is failing to provide justice and such outdated charges being pressed while more pressing concerns go unheeded and ignored is something we want to highlight,” the press statement quotes.

The statement describes the charges on Ali Waheed as a series of ‘attacks’ targeted on MDP members. The party also stressed that it was being subject to threats and intimidation from various sources.

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Galolhu-south constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof and Ali Waheed are being prosecuted in the case.

An official of the Prosecutor General’s (PG) office detailed that Mahloof and Ali Waheed are being charged for removing the police barricades near Muliaage on March 25, 2010 and obstructing police personnel.  Both MPs are being charged under Article 75 of the Police Act which is impeding the duty of a police officer, official added.
