Finance Ministry asks to pay Ramadan allowance by July 19

Finance Ministry has asked all government institutions to pay the Ramadan allowance to civil service employees by July 19. A circular by the Ministry stressed that the details of the Ramadan allowance must be prepared and sent to the Ministry before July 11. The payment vouchers must be issued after ensuring the allowance has been allocated in the relevant budget code, Finance Ministry’s circular read.

Employment Act stipulates every Muslim employee would be entitled to a Ramadan allowance of one third of the monthly salary. However, if one third of a salary is less than MVR2,000 the respective employee must be afforded an allowance of MVR2,000 according to the Act. In addition, if an employee’s one third of the salary is in excess of MVR10,000 the employee would receive MVR10,000 as Ramadan allowance.

If a respective employee receives remuneration from two separate institutions, Finance Ministry has asked the primary employing office to allocate the Ramadan allowance for such employees.
