Discussions have begun in the parliament on the request of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to come up with a plan to handle the final decision of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), set up to investigate the transfer of power on February 7. Deputy Leader of MDPâ™s parliamentary group and Thoddoo constituency MP Ali Waheed said today that a plan needs to be set n motion on how to deal with final results of the findings of CNI regardless of the verdict.
âœThe discussions are underway. Every second of life that passes is not easy to get back, so we see it as important to come up with a plan to deal with the final decision of CNI whatever that decision may be,â Ali Waheed said.
Though discussions have begun inside the parliament, official discussions have not begun with the government via the parliament; a certain plan of action is not final. However efforts have been brought to the attention of the government through the mediator of the All Party Road Map Talks Ahmed Mujthaba.
Haveeru has learned that MDP mainly wants to add two more items to the All Party Road-Map Talks agenda and to come up with a way to deal with the conclusion of the CNI before its final report and to come up with a system under which cases against political offenders can be dropped.
âœThe CNI might reach three different decisions. It is a coup, it is not a coup or there is no accurate conclusion. MDP wants to come up with a plan of action to deal with the final outcome based on the three scenarios,â a pro-government MP revealed on terms of anonymity.
Given the unsuccessful Road-Map Talks with Mujthaba as the mediator for the past six months, MDP favours, cooling down the political environment through the parliament and pro-government parties have not objected to this. And given MDPâ™s desire for President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to join the discussions it has been brought directly with him.
âœAs a policy, President Waheed does not object to joining the discussions, but he wants the details of what is to be discussed,â the pro-government MP said.
MP Ali Waheed claimed that the current political turmoil can be solved with the help of the parliamentary group leaders in the parliament and with the help of experienced political figures.
âœThe talks mediated by Mujthaba were nothing but taunts. Six months into the discussions and no headway has been made. And while weâ™re paying lip service our economy is crumbling, the Veshifahi Housing Project is in a confused mess, consulting a doctor through the Aasandha Health Service is with a charge from today onwards. Though some say a solution cannot be reached from within the parliament, it is the political fortress of the country. An agreement can be reached there. Right now we need experienced political leaders who can make strong decisions,â Ali Waheed said.
He called on to âœtone down the emotionsâ since the six months has passed since the âœcoupâ and commence with reasonable speech and that MDP is ready for just that and that the party has halted itâ™s âœDirect Action Protestsâ to pave the way for recommencing talks.
âœHowever, government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza had said that MDP must show their resolve through action. That is just an excuse, and weâ™re seeing the government not take too much liking to discussions. But instead for now we need to neutralise the âœradical elementsâ of the party. That is what responsible political parties should be doing now,â he said.
Pro-government parties also claim that MDP hasnâ™t so far submitted their proposals in documents but that it would make drafting the agenda and commencing with the Talks. A leading member of a party also said that a mediator has also not been selected to conduct these specific talks as representation of the parliament.
