Speaker optimistic over positive outcome of tomorrow's sitdown

Parliament Speaker Abdulla Shahid has expressed optimism that the sit-down scheduled for tomorrow to establish a stable environment would pave the way to recommencing the presently suspended Parliament sessions. In response to a question from Haveeru, Shahid hailed political figures agreeing for a sit-down to resolve the ongoing strife was an achievement in itself.

“The initiative to come to the discussion table is a major accomplishment. I’ve always supported resolutions through dialogue. Hence this is certainly a step forward,” Shahid said.

The Speaker as of normal principle did not disclose further details of the scheduled sit-down tomorrow. Shahid has always maintained that revealing details to the media could undermine such sensitive discussions.

The talks are to be held among the Parliamentary group leaders of the political parties and the Vice-President Mohamed Waheed Deen will be representing the government at the sit-down.

The Parliament sessions were indefinitely suspended citing an unsafe and hazardous environment on July 31, after the MDP Parliamentarians repeatedly attempted to impede its sessions over the issue of Aasandha (National Health Insurance) Scheme.
