Coalition cannot produce a solitary candidate: Thasmeen

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that he does not believe that the pro-government coalition can produce a lone candidate to compete in the upcoming Presidential elections. Kendhoo constituency MP Thasmeen said that based on the present circumstances it is unlikely that a unanimous candidate can be produced. As some parties has kick started its campaigns for the elections, Thasmeen said that the government coalition parties have various disputes over several issues.

“We are supporting the government at this moment in time to prevent country’s Presidential system being plunged into a possible legal limbo and to keep the oppressive rule of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) from gaining the upper hand. We are sticking by the decision as it involves national interest,” Thasmeen said.

He said that the parties in the coalition are with the government not because they support each other's policies. Thasmeen stated that the stand of the parties is very different from one another and that he believes that the coalition producing a common candidate cannot be beneficial to the people.

He said that the people will know how the country should progress and that the people should be given the opportunity to decide.

“I do not see this (producing a unanimous candidate) as a good decision. I do not see the benefits of doing so. But as some among the government had lobbied for it, we are willing to hear them out.” Thasmeen said.

The civil coalition in the government is trying to identify and name a unanimous candidate to represent the coalition in the elections.
