Broadcasting Commission condemns attack on RajjeTV

Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) has strongly condemned the cutoff of Raajje TV cables after breaking into its control room today. In a press statement the commission on Tuesday stated “the attack on Raajje TV is a premeditated cowardly act to suppress the freedom expression and the freedom of the media.”

“MBC strictly condemns the break-in and damage of Raajje TV broadcasting equipment. The commission sees this as a premeditated cowardly act to suppress the freedom expression and the freedom of the media.” MBC statement said.

MBC also called on the police to expedite the investigation in to the case and to bring those responsible to justice. MBC also urged the police to withdraw their decision not to co-operate with Raajje TV and to treat all broadcasters in the same manner.

Deputy CEO of Raajje TV Abdulla Yamin said that it is believed that the perpetrators had entered the control room after forcing the electronic locking system of the building. The damage inflicted on the cables has suspended the station’s programs.

“The severed cables also include ones that aren’t even available in the Maldives,” Yamin said.
