MP Adil case appealed at High Court

State on Thursday appealed the case of child sexual abuse over Maradhoo constituency MP Hassan Adil at High Court which had earlier been decided not guilty by the lower court. Adil had been charged under Article 1 and 3 of the Special Protection to Children, Young, Elderly and Disadvantaged People’s Act. The Criminal Court declared MP Adil not guilty under Article 47 of the constitution as sufficient evidence as stipulated by the Article had not been submitted to court by the State.

Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office official stated that the High Court has accepted the appeal on Thursday.

The law prohibits touching an underage child with sexual intent and that a 10 â€" 14 year jail sentence is applicable if convicted.

Article 73 of the constitution states that “a person shall be disqualified from election as a member of the Parliament, if he has been convicted of a criminal offence and is serving a sentence of more than twelve months.”

MP Adil was a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member when he was first charged, but recently defected from MDP to pro-government Jumhoory Party (JP).
