Following the plea by the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) to revoke the decision by the Police not to extend cooperation to Raajje TV, Police today said that a decision would be made after discussions. Police media official revealed that MBC would meet with the Police over cooperating with Raajje TV. However, a date for the decision was not disclosed. Official added that the details of the meeting scheduled for this afternoon would be shared with the media afterwards.
Maldives Police Service had decided to cease extending cooperation to opposition Raajje TV on June 24. In a statement explaining the decision, Police had alleged that Raajje TV was continuously broadcasting fabricated and false content intended to defame, tarnish and undermine the integrity of the Police in the eyes of the people.
MBC had earlier urged the Police to reverse its decision and continue to cooperate with Raajje TV. The Commission detailed that in a democratic society, under no circumstances must any institution stymie or impede the independence of media.
