Heavy Load asked to pay MVR48 million for Kahdhoo Airport Guest Houses

Kahdhoo Airport Company has notified Heavy Load Maldives to pay the company MVR48 million owed in rent and penalties. A letter signed by the Interim Director of the company Ahmed Ali sent to the Director of Heavy Load Mudhrikath Moosa on May 29, 2012 states that “the company is asked to pay a total of MVR48,664,744.52 owed to the government prior to the annexing of the guest houses (on May 20, 2012), before July 31, 2012 to either the Ministry of Transport and Communication or the Regional Airport.”

Heavy Load had also been informed on June 4, 2012 to pay the amount owed for electricity bills which amounts to MVR52,244.50 and to pay it before June 30, 2012. Haveeru has received a copy of the letter.

An official from Heavy Load revealed that the guest house had not been annexed from the company but that company had given it up. However the official refused to talk about the matter of rent and fines.

Ahmed said that Heavy Load Maldives had not paid the rent for the guest houses since taking the responsibility of operating the guest houses on November 2010 and that the company had only paid the six months advance payment.

He added that while the guest houses had been rented out to Heavy Load for MVR3 million per year and that rent fines constitute a major amount in the current MVR48 million owed.

“In the lease agreement it is stated that a 2.5 percent fine will be charged for every day the payment is overdue. We’ve asked them to pay the money even today via a letter, but so far Heavy Load has not paid the money,” he said.
