The government has decided to reconsider its decision to appoint Vice President Waheedeen as the representative of the government in talks to resume parliament sittings under a more peaceful environment to regulate work. Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza said yesterday that the government has begun to reconsider its decision from yesterday following an incident in Hulhumale where the Vice President had been taunted by supporters of former President Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during a visit to inaugurate a futsal field set up by the “Unity Through Futsal†project run by the Youth Ministry, State Trading Organisation (STO), Police, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Football Association of the Maldives (FAM) on the island on Thursday.
“It wasn’t a political event. It was an event about the youth and society. But residents from Male had also been taken to the island to taunt the Vice President. We strictly condemn the act. This was conducted directly under MDP’s banner. So it is not acceptable for us,†Abbas said.
Police had arrested two to four people during the unrest. While the government is reconsidering its decision, opposition MDP has brought it’s “Direct Action Protests†to a halt to pave the way for recommencing of the All Party Road-Map Talks, and the government has welcomed this decision on the part of the party.
