President to join Talks if MDP shows resolve through action

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has said that though the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has declared that it will halt its 'Direct Action' protests, President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik will only attend the talks once MDP backs its decision through action. When questioned by Haveeru regarding MDP’s National Steering Committee’s decision yesterday to pave way for the recommencing of the All Party Road Map Talks, Abbas said that the party’s resolve “should be seen through its actions” and that the President will decide on whether to join the talks after a brief observation period.

“Though MDP tells the media that they’ve stopped their Direct Action protests considering the actions of the party’s members it’s hard to trust them. There’s a lot of intimidation. They’re attacking the vehicles belonging to ministers, harassing their families, disrespecting mosques, so the government needs assurance that the harassing will stop. We need to see it happen from their actions,” Abbas said.

MDP has stopped the “Direct Action” protest to pave way for the recommencing of the All Party Road Map talks and allow more time for prayer during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

The government and its allies had also stated earlier that the All Party Road Map talks cannot commence until MDP stopped their protests.
