Government calls on ACC to expedite GMR probe

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has called on to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to expedite its probe in order to reach a decision on the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) operator GMR, India case. Abbas said that before deciding on the matter, the government will be very much dependent on the ACC investigation report in to the alleged corruption involved in the awarding of INIA to GMR.

“ACC investigation report in to the case is very important to decide on reclaiming the airport from GMR or to proceed with the agreement. It will not be easy to decide on GMR before the ACC investigation is done. Hence the probe needs to be expedited. I call upon the ACC to expedite the investigation,” Abbas said.

He said that aside from the ACC report, the government also needs to consider the coalition parties stand on the issue as well. Government coalition parties had sent letters to the President.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali on Monday said that the party would decide on the issue of INIA operator GMR, India after President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik's stand and assessment is received.

Thasmeen also added that if the agreement is legit, the government must adhere to it and move forward in a way that does not undermine investor confidence in the Maldives.

In addition of the awarding of the INIA, ACC stated that it is also looking in to two more involving GMR.
