National Steering Committee of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed to put an end to its ongoing 'Direct Action' protest calling for early elections from last month, to pave the way for the All Party Roadmap Talks. The decision to end the ‘Direct Action’ protests came at a time when both the government and its supporting political parties have stressed that they would agree to a sit-down once MDP stops its street protests.
Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza had revealed earlier that the pro-government political parties have refused to come to the discussion table until MDP ends its street protests.
MDP detailed last night that the decision to cease its ‘Direct Action’ protests was made by former President Mohamed Nasheed under advice of the Steering Committee in order to facilitate dialogue between the political parties.
The party also added that as the final ten days of the month of Ramadan begins, the decision was also made to allow more time for religious worship.
MDP protesters have clashed with Police during the protests held through the course of over a month where both sides have suffered varying degrees of injuries. Since the commencement of Ramadan however, MDP has mellowed down its protests where the party has held peaceful marches on the streets of the capital Male calling for early elections.
While MDP has decided to end its ‘Direct Action’ protest, the party had earlier vowed to continue with the protests until President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s government is overthrown.
