Pro-government Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) has urged the Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid to resume the indefinitely suspended Parliament sessions after citing that a calm and peaceful setting needed to hold the sessions was absent. In a letter sent to the Speaker Wednesday, DQP noted that the mandate of the Parliament blocked due to the efforts of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was an infringement of democratic norms and principles. It also said that the rest of the members of the Parliament were concerned due to the actions of the opposition party.
DQP also urged the Speaker to notify the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) and the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) of the efforts of MDP to stymie Parliament sessions.
“Also the work of the Committees is stalled due to the suspended Parliament. Hence as the laws to combat the rising crime rates, unrest, violence and acts of terrorism are held up at the Committees, we request you (Speaker) to facilitate the resumption of Parliament sessions and Committees,†the letter signed by DQP Vice President and Vilufushi constituency MP Riyaz Rasheed said.
“Article 105 of the Constitution obligates the security forces to assist the Speaker.â€
Speaker Abdulla Shahid had indefinitely suspended the Parliament on July 31 citing that a calm and peaceful setting needed to hold the sessions was lacking at present.
However, despite the suspended Parliament a special session was held on August 5 after discussions with the political parties represented in Parliament, which had passed the duration of the 47 regulations entailed within the Annex 1 and 2 of the legislation on general regulations.
