Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu has claimed that the Artificial Beach which was previously assigned to the Male City Council was taken under the Housing Ministry to be developed for the benefit of the community. Minister said that the government plans to develop the Artificial Beach area in a more productive way to benefit the community and that the development of the area will commence in the near future.
âœWe want to make the place a beneficial place to Male and to introduce new ideas which would benefit the neighborhood, instead of leaving the place like how it is now. Some of the projects are now at planning stageâ Muizzu said.
Minister said that the usual swimming area will not be changed and that only the other areas will be developed. Muizzu said that the area will be developed considering social, economical and the benefits to tourism.
Cabinetâ™s decision to reassign Sultan Park and Artificial Beach area from Male City Council to the Housing Ministry was followed by criticism from Male City Council, which stated that the land area assigned to the council cannot be seized like that.
Minister said that the decisions about the land lots were decided in accordance with the rules and regulations.
âœThe meaning of taking control over the area is to designate the place for development but municipal services like cleaning the area is still under the legal obligations of the council. We are removing the area from the list of land plots under their administrative responsibilities to develop the areaâ Muizzu said.
Minister claimed that Sultan Park has also been considered for further development. He added that the place is being removed from their administrative power as a matter of national security.
Besides Artificial Beach and Sultan Park, Housing Ministry and the Male City Council have also been in odds over the control of Usfasgandu area currently being used by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for its political activities.
