Mujthaba ready to work for the Enquiry Commission

Ahmed Mujthaba who is the current mediator of the All Party Talks has said that he is ready and has no objections to being appointed to the National Enquiry Commission (NEC) set up to investigate the reasons behind the downfall of former President Mohamed Nasheed's government. Muthaba was also amongst the first members appointed to the NEC but the government withdrew his name on his request as he was filling in the position of mediator in the All Party Talks and replaced him with Dr Ali Favaz Shareef.

He revealed that the government had asked him if he had any objections to being appointed as a member to the NEC as it is currently re-composing the commission as requested by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

“I was asked if I had any objections (to becoming a member of the commission)? I said that I am willing to be a member of the commission as long as no conflict of interest arises, but that the government would have to take care of it,” he said.

What Mujthaba was trying to convey is that he would either be a member of the NEC or the mediator of the All Party Talks.

“Working in both places will raise a conflict of interest. I have yet not been appointed to the commission and I don’t believe it is official when the government simply questions,” Mujthaba said.

Former President Nasheed had claimed last Thursday that Mujthaba will replace the current Chair of the commission Ismail Shafeeu who is to leave the commission on May 31.

However government spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza countered Nasheed’s claim and said Shafeeu has no plans of resigning and Haveeru was unable to get a word from Shafeeu about the matter.

Mujthaba said that Nasheed had not approached him to appoint him as his member to the commission. The commission’s work has currently been stopped due to the government revising the composition of the commission, and the government has given Nasheed two weeks to appoint a member who fits all the terms and conditions specified by the government to the commission to represent his side.

The commissions work has also been extended for two more months.
