In a general meeting held last night pro-government Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Hithadhoo-south constituency MP Hassan Latheef has said that DRP would never form a coalition with opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). In the meeting which was originally scheduled to be held last week was postponed due to the few numbers of attendees, Hassan Latheef denied the rumors spreading that DRP was working with MDP addressing the 200 people gathered.
He said that MDP has failed, and that he has been assured by high level officials of DRP that the party will never agree to a coalition with MDP.
In the meeting last night, Latheef’s criticism was mostly aimed at the Addu City Council. In this regard, he said that he does not believe that the council had been established upon the principles of the law.
In the ‘DRP special gathering’ held at Hithadhoo Sharafuddeen School, Latheef said that even though the council had been elected by votes, the council disregards the decentralization act.
He said that the decentralization act was compiled to ease the services provided to the people, but the actions of the council at present were to the contrary.
He said that while there was several number of departments formed under various names within the islands, the time taken to relay the information to the relevant government authorities had increased. He noted that the National Identity Card processing service which had been carried out in Addu previously had now been ceased.
In addition he said that water supply and sanitation facilities had not been well-organized and planned. He also blamed the council for the halt in Hithadhoo and Hulhumeedhoo harbor construction work.
He said that the current government had assured that ongoing projects and preplanned projects will not be interrupted and will go on as planned. He said that the development projects for Addu must go on.
“The situation in Addu has deteriorated; it is similar to as that of 25 years back. The development of Addu was burnt to ashes by MDP within a few moments,†Latheef said.
“Hence Addu needs to be redeveloped, for this we need money. We believe that the government will work to redevelop Addu even if it takes time to get the funds,†he added.
Latheef said that he will always remain in DRP and assured that he will not work in any party other than DRP for the next five years.
