Government influencing Elections Commission claims refuted

President's Office and Elections Commission (EC) have refuted the accusations by former President Mohamed Nasheed that the current government was trying to exert its influence over the EC. Vice President of EC Ahmed Fayaz said “no one has tried to influence this commission.”

Speaking after inaugurating a new Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) camp in the capital Male on Tuesday night, Nasheed had alleged that the government was trying to influence the Elections Commission by offering high ranking posts to the officials.

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza labeled Nasheed’s accusations in relation to the EC as a “blatant lie.”

He further stressed that the government had done no such thing and added that the former President had failed to detail the basis of his allegations.

“Also an Ambassador’s post would not be offered verbally. Inshah Allah Nasheed would not succeed in his attempts to paint a false picture to the outside world about the situation in the Maldives,” Abbas said.

Nasheed had also alleged that if an early election is not held within this calendar year, there was a real possibility that elections would never take place in the Maldives.

He further expressed concern that the government could succeed in its efforts and influence the result of a vote and stressed on the importance of an election as early as possible to deny the government that opportunity.
