Housing Ministry has requested the Home Ministry to implement the process of taking control over Usfasgandu area after the deadline for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to handover the area to Housing Ministry had passed. The cabinet had decided to hand over the Usfasgandu area to the Housing Ministry after the area was deemed to be used for a purpose other than for which it was leased. Male City Council was ordered to handover the area to the Housing Ministry by last Monday; however the council had not done so.
Housing Minister Mohamed Muizz on Saturday said that all the legal documentation and other preparations have been done. Hence âœthere is no more legal procedure for the ministry to carry out,â Muizz said.
âœThere is no more legal procedure for the ministry to carry out which we havenâ™t attended to. We have fully carried out the procedure. The Attorney General has also reviewed our work,â he said.
Muizz said that Housing Ministry has made a request at the Home Ministry to implement the process of the takeover of Usfasgandu and the handover to Housing Ministry. Haveeru was unable to get a word from the Home Ministry regarding the issue.
Muizz said that the ministry had held talks with the Male City Council on two separate occasions and that letters had also been exchanged between the two authorities in an effort to resolve the matter.
However, Male City Council stated that a single lot out of the 32 lots assigned to the council can only be confiscated if the land was used illegally. The council also stated that Usfasgandu has not been used illegally.
The council stated that Usfasgandu area has been leased to MDP under the same procedure in which other political parties get to hold their activities on a temporary basis. The council stated that the permit was given upon considering the current situation and to keep people from protesting on the streets of Male. The council stated that this would keep the people from protesting on the roads and would also facilitate a proper platform to carry out political activities. Tweet Bookmark Print Badge the Comments!
