GMR halts work on new terminal

The Civil Aviation Authority has revealed today that GMR has halted the construction of the new 55,000 square meter terminal which had begun without the consent of the authority. Chief Executive Officer Hussain Jaleel said that GMR had informed the authority last week via a letter that construction has been halted and that the company would request permission for construction from the authority.

“We asked them to halt construction because it had started without the necessary consent from us. We can only issue a permit now after we check on certain things. Their letter stated that they will seek permission from us,” he said.

The cabinet had also decided last week to call a halt to the construction of the new terminal.

GMR stated that work on the terminal had been halted on August 2 itself after the authority had asked the company to do so.

While the Housing Ministry had refused to provide a permit to allow GMR to begin construction of the new terminal it was the Male City Council which eventually issued a permit claiming that the council had the authority to issue building permits to Hulhule as well and GMR has revealed that over 50 percent of the work has been completed.

The company revealed that work on the terminal structure will be completed by next January and that the terminal will be fully completed in 2014.
