Only DRP hasn't responded to GMR issue: Spokesperson

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has revealed that only Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) is yet to respond to the letter sent by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik seeking the opinion of pro-government parties over the agreement with Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) operator GMR. In response to question from Haveeru in relation to the letter, Abbas said that DRP is the only party that had not replied in writing to President Waheed’s letter.

“Their (DRP) argument is that the only option is to adhere to the agreement signed between the political parties in 2010 over the GMR issue, which is to try and stop the project through litigation,” Abbas said.

“DRP is yet to respond in writing.”

Though DRP is yet to respond, other political parties have primarily expressed their opinion to adhere to the agreement signed on June 26, 2010 between the then opposition parties to object the awarding of INIA to GMR. Some parties in their response to President Waheed had further added that INIA must be reclaimed for the sake of the laws, economy and safety of the nation.

When contacted by Haveeru earlier a DRP official had refused to comment citing that the issue was a personal matter of the party.
