Parliament has been suspended indefinitely as a calm and peaceful setting needed to hold the sessions is lacking at present. A statement of the Speaker of Parliament Abdull Shahid read that after deliberations with the leaders of political parties to seek a peaceful resolution, the decision had been taken to suspend Parliament sessions with effect from today under the authority afforded to the Speaker in Article 213 (5) of the rule of procedure.
Shahid detailed that he had been confronted by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during the mayhem in the parliament session today. The confrontations had taken place during the protest that ensued after attempts were made to remove two MDP MPs from the floor.
âœHence as the atmosphere needed to continue the sessions cannot be assured, and as the recent sessions had to be ended prematurely under similar circumstances, and as I believe that situation as of now is similar to what is stipulated under Article 213 (5) of the Parliamentâ™s procedure, and as a precautionary measure against the present circumstances, and as the work of the Parliament can only be carried out if the various political parties in Parliament can align their political differences peacefully and arrive at political consensus, the Parliament sessions have been suspended with effect today under the authority afforded to the Speaker in Article 213 (5) of the rule of procedure after deliberations with the leaders of political parties to seek a peaceful resolution.â
Since the beginning of Ramadan, the Parliament sessions have not been productive as almost every day the sessions are ended prematurely after the order of the sessions are lost.
Some MDP MPs had even marched into the Parliamentâ™s Finance Committee and stymied the meeting today.
MDP yesterday stressed that the party would no longer extend its cooperation to the government in the Parliament.
