Police refute brutality on MPs claim by MDP

Police have responded to a statement issued by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) claiming that leading members of the party's parliamentary group are being subject to brutal treatment and arrest. MDP released the statement following the arrest of the party’s parliamentary group members, Maafannu-South constituency MP Ibrahim Rasheed, Thinadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Gasam and Kendhikulhudhoo constituency MP Ahmed Esa, during a motorcycle rally held by the party yesterday.

The statement read that the party condemns the brutal actions of the Police targeting leading members of the party participating in its Direct Action protests in the strictest of terms.

“Noting that the three members of MDP that had been arrested have faced Police brutality more than once during the party’s Direct Action Protests, the party calls on the Police to remain within their legal limits,” it read.

In response to this statement the Police have stated that the three MPs were arrested following violations of traffic regulations, disrupting peace and obstructing the Police from carrying out their duties.

Ibrahim Rasheed during an interview on Raajje TV said that he was bitten while being taken into Police custody, but Police deny the claim and stated no MP had been hurt during the arrest.

“Before and after the three members were brought under Police custody they had yelled obscenities at the Police, showed disobedience and inflicted varying degrees of assaults on the Police in front of all the media outlets in the Maldives,” it was stated on the Police website.

The Police also stated that the institution condemns false accusations made against it in the strictest of terms. The three MPs have been released now.
