Faafu Dharanboodhoo, Ali 'Alibe' Mamdhooh has decided to sell the ambergris he found on the beach of the island for MVR3.4 million. The ambergris weighed 12 kilo 300 grams at the time Alibe found it; however it weighs only 9 kilo 300 grams now. It is said that ambergris decrease in weight over time.
Alibe said on Sunday that he had been offered USD32.50 per gram by a French national through a local dealer. Alibe said that he had been guaranteed that it would be sold on Tuesday.
âœWhen I compared the prices, Maldivians offer MVR100 per gram which would total MVR900,000. The Frenchman has guaranteed that he would buy the ambergris at 10.00 in the morning on the May 5,â Alibe said.
This time Alibe visited Male with his ambergris to sell it to the party with the best offer which he failed to do on his last visit to Male as he was unable secure a suitable offer from a trustworthy party.
Alibe said that the buyer also agreed to pay him MVR225,000 for the four days the boat is in Male harbor without going for fishing as the ambergris is being stored onboard for the period.
âœThe dhoani (boat) would earn that much if it had goes fishing. So it was agreed to compensate MVR225,000 for the lost income from the Dhoaniâ Alibe said.
