Police has apprehended a suspect and launched an investigation in to the alleged murder of a 65 year old woman from Haa Dhaal Atoll Neykurendhoo, who had been initially thought to have died from a natural cause. Haveeru has found that a person married to a Neykurendhoo woman had been apprehended on suspicion of the murder of Neykurendhoo, Ranville, Fathimath â˜Fathima Dhaithaâ™ Zakariyya.
Fathima Dhaithaâ™s family came to see her as they had not heard from her, only to find her dead at her home at around 9.30 on the night of April 15. Her family and local residents had thought that she had passed away of a natural death.
Police started their investigation in to her death after her family came across some crucial evidence that could turn the death in to a murder case.
Fathima Dhaitha who was a widow with four children is said to have received the allowance given to the elderly. She also weaves and lives alone.
âœShe was lying dead on her bed. Her hands were on her chest and she was peaceful. Nobody noticed anything odd at first. But after her family members had returned from her funeral they realized that her phone and all her money were missing. Then only did they realize that she had no jewelry on her when she was buried,â a local resident wishing to remain anonymous told Haveeru.
He said that the police had placed suspects on surveillance and had apprehended a suspect from Kulhudhuffushi, 10 days after her death.
âœPolice were searching for the suspect when her (Fathima Dhaithaâ™s) phone was turned on in Kulhudhuffushi, from where the person was arrestedâ a person speaking from Neykurendhoo said.
Some islanders had numerous reasons to suspect the person, as the suspect was seen wandering near the house on the night of the murder, carried large sums of money even when the suspect was unemployed and traveled to Kulhudhuffushi on a hired speed boat.
The resident added that the police had brought the suspect back to Neykurendhoo and had made the suspect recreate the crime scene at Fathima Dhaithaâ™s residence.
