A case of police brutality on February 8 to PG

Police Integrity Commission has forwarded the case of a police officer who had been charged for allegedly assaulting and torture of a member of the public during the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest on February 8, to the Prosecutor General's Office. The case of the inhumane and remorseless assault on Mohamed Niyaz, Gaaf dhaal Atoll Faresmaathodaa, Gandhakoalhige during the MDP protest following the controversial resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed a day earlier, by Staff Sergeant Ali Ahmed has been forwarded to the PG office.

Integrity Commission detailed that during the investigation of the accusations of excessive force used by the Police while breaking up the MDP protest on February 8, video footage had revealed that the accused had brutally kicked the victim while he was on the ground.

Commission further added that the criminal charges had been filed against Ali Ahmed, in light of the statements and other evidence obtained during the investigation.
During the clashes that ensued on February 8, several police officers and protesters alike had been injured.

Media personnel had also witnessed the excessive force and brutal tactics used by the Police to disperse protesters on February 8.
