Dispute over 25 kilogram ambergris in Hanimaadhoo

The 25 kilogram ambergris found last Friday in Haa Dhaal Atoll Hanimaadhoo has the whole island in uproar. The dispute over the issue of sharing the ambergris is now being investigated by the police. Hanimaadhoo council stated that the police keep watch outside the house where the ambergris is kept.

It is said that Haa Dhaal Naavaidhoo, Shifaz Abdul Gafoor, who works at Haa Alif Dhonakulhi resort, saw the ambergris first and had taken it ashore with the help of two others.

Council stated that three people had claimed ownership of the ambergris including the person from Naavaidhoo and two others from Hanimaadhoo.

Vice President of the Council, Masood Adam said that most of the people had agreed to share the money gained from the ambergris among the eight people on the beach at the time the ambergris was found. However, Gafoor had opposed the idea and had reported the issue to the police. The ambergris is kept in a store room in a house in the island.

“The issue is over Gafoor not agreeing to share the wealth among the eight people” another member of the council said.

Council stated that many believe that it is ambergris, however, a sample from the ambergris has been sent to Male for confirmation.

Police media official said that the police is active on the scene as the dispute might lead to further issues. It also stated that the police have not taken control of the ambergris.

Recently an increased number of ambergris have been sighted in the Maldives and many of which have been causing major disputes.
