The Parliament's Committee assessing the four Ministers nominated by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, has approved only Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed as the Gender Minister today. While the Government Accountability Committee approved Dhiyana, Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu, Health Minister Dr Ahmed Jamsheed and Environment Minister Dr Mariyam Shakeela had not received the approval of the Committee.
During the Committee meeting with eight member participation today, all three members of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Feydhoo constituency MP Alhan Fahmy who recently signed with pro-government Jumhoory Party had voted against Dr. Muizzu, Dr Jamsheed and Dr Shakeela.
When the vote on granting approval for Dhiyana had ended all square, she was approved by the vote of the Chair of the Committee Hanimaadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Mujuthaz. However, Alhan had not participated in that vote.
Dr Jamsheed and Dr Muizzu had earlier been approved by the Parliament. But following the changes to the structures of their respective ministerial portfolios they had retaken the oath of office and had been sent to the Parliament for approval.
Although the Committee has pro-government MPs majority, the three lawmakers representing pro-government parties had not partaken in today’s meeting.
Even though the Committee has not approved the three Ministers, the final decision on the matter would be taken on the Parliament floor.
