Government authorities yesterday held a meeting at Iskandhar Koshi to address the increase in gang violence and murders in the Maldives and have agreed to find an immediate solution to the problem. The current situation in the country, the challenges to overcoming these issues and possible solutions to them were discussed during the meeting.
Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, Attorney General Azima Shakoor, Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu, Deputy Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed, members of the parliamentâ™s National Security Committee and members of the Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS) took part in the meeting.
Police revealed that establishing a system under which the constitution and regulations can be effectively implemented without offering concessions to criminals was discussed along with also finding a way to ensure those convicted and sentenced to prison do indeed serve their time.
It was also revealed that the authorities also discussed speeding up serious crime cases.
âœReflecting on the long term drafting an action plan focusing on the changes that need to be brought to the education system and preparing the younger generations for the job market and to be more constructive was discussed, which when complete will then be submitted to the cabinet,â the press release issued after the meeting stated.
Within the past four months four people were murdered in the country, the cases of which, the Police are still investigating.
