Former President Mohamed Nasheed has claimed that the International Democratic Union (IDU) would extend assistance to the Maldives in holding an early presidential election. Speaking to reporters at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) after returning to Male from the IDU meeting held in New Zealand from May 27-29 last night, Nasheed added that the participants of the sit-down aimed at strengthening political parties and democracy were ready to assist the Maldives to hold early presidential polls.
âœAll parties comprised in the Union pledged that they would advocate for early elections. Thatâ™s why we would receive support from those nations for that endeavor,â he detailed.
Referring to the Police search of the Usfasgandu area being used by his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to host its political activities, Nasheed stressed that âœdesperate times would require such desperate measures.â
âœHumans tend to resort to heavy handed tactics when times are desperate. It is a flaw which is quite disappointing. I hope that civilized measures would be restored where issues would be resolved by peaceful means,â he said.
Nasheed was greeted by large numbers of MDP supporters as he arrived in Male after the conclusion of his trip to New Zealand.
After greeting his supporters, Nasheed had then walked to Usfasgandu and addressed the MDP supporters gathered in the area.
