MDP to take action against Defence Minister Nazim for "intimidating" the party

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has pledged action against Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim after alleging that Nazim had intimidated the party following the report of the events of February 7 issued by two prominent members of the previous administration. Nazim had called on the military officers whose names have been included in the report tcompiled by former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam and former National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal of the former administration to litigate the people responsible for the defamation.

The Minister had also alleged the MDP was undermining the credibility of the military and would not be afraid by the attempts of the opposition party.

Interim Chairperson of MDP and Hulhu-henveiru constituency MP Moosa ‘Reeko” Manik claimed that the case of intimidation by Nazim was being reviewed through the Elections Commission. In addition, the matter was also being assessed by the party’s legal committee for possible litigation.

“We will not accept such intimidation tactics by someone who has assumed a government post by force. We will respond in full,” Moosa said.

Former Home Minister had also countered the claims made by Nazim against MDP. Speaking during the MDP National Congress meeting yesterday, Hassan Afeef said while Nazim had pledged litigation against those who discredit the military, he was the one ruining the image of the institution by instigating the “coup”. He added that the Police were being disgraced by the Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz.

Afeef further claimed that the honor of the Police and the military can only be restored after litigating Nazim, Riyaz and the other officers involved in overthrowing the previous government.

“I call on the officers of the military and the police who were not involved in the coup to litigate the case of present Defence Minister Nazim,” he stressed.

Former Home Minister also claimed that there was nothing more to be done to prove that the government had been toppled in a “coup” and alleged that the people currently in power also believe that it was in fact a “coup.”
