Nazim calls on officers defamed in MDP report to litigate

Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim has called on the military officers whose names have been included in the report of the events leading up to the transfer of power on February 7 published by two prominent members of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to litigate the people responsible. Speaking during a press conference about the mandate of the Defence Ministry, Nazim detailed that the military officers and their families had the right to litigate the persons responsible for defamation and the Ministry would assist in every way possible.

“Discussions are ongoing amongst us in relation to the matter. The recent opinionated report had included the names of some. I’ve advised them to litigate and challenge the defamation,” Minister added.

Nazim further claimed that as the report had contained his name, he would decide on litigation after assessing the matter.

“When the former government had ousted me, I had challenged the decision and I was restored to my post after I won the lawsuit. I’m not afraid of MDP,” he said.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) had responded to the report compiled by former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam and former National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal of Nasheed’s administration, stating that some MNDF officers were involved in the downfall of former President Mohamed Nasheed's government.

In the statement, the military pledged action against those who attempt to undermine its credibility and integrity.

The report published by Aslam and Faisal had included the names of the military officers which they allege to have ‘partaken’ in the conspiracy along with the then opposition.
