No work had been carried out after High Court order: Immigration

Immigration Department has said that it did not carry out any work of the border control system project with Malaysia's Nexbiz Limited after the High Court had ordered to cease work. In a press statement by the immigration department regarding the High Court order on May 10, to temporarily cease work on the border control project with Malaysian company Nexbiz as the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) suspected corruption in the project, it stated that “We assure that all work on the project had been halted,” it said. It also stated that the 75 laptops seized by the ACC were for the border control system project and that the laptops were handed over to their employees before the court order was issued.

Immigration Department informed that the laptops received on May 4 were given to their employees between the 6 and 10 of this month.

“Documents will indicate that the laptops were awarded to the department before the project was put on hold. These documents have been taken by the ACC,” immigration statement read.

It stated that the ACC had refused to explain why the ACC had raided the immigration department offices, Immigration Head Office, Airport Control Section and the Work Visa Section of Immigration last Wednesday.

“In reply to the question if the ACC had come to investigate in relation to the case at the High Court, ACC had replied that it was a different case. But on May 23, referring to ACC Vice-President, Haveeru reported that the ACC had launched their investigation to see if the Immigration Department had awarded the laptops received from Nexbiz to individual employees of the Immigration Department” statement detailed.

Immigration denied accusations by ACC that their employees had sold the laptops issued to them, stating that it such allegations were baseless and untrue.

Immigration also denied the claims that the ACC officials were stymied and locked up. It stated that they “did not lock up ACC officials and left them in the dark” and that the police officers present at the time would be testament to the fact.

Immigration also stated that the ACC had invaded the residence of an immigration employee last Wednesday morning without a court order and had undermined its sanctity.

“This act had damaged the employee reputation in front of neighbors and had subjected a child to psychological trauma” the statement read.

The statement labeled the act by ACC as illegitimate and strongly condemned the act. We also condemn the act by the ACC as it had disrupted the good name and reputation of the sincere and hard working employees of this department. But ACC had denied these accusations and has said that it had not acted against anyone out of the contours of the law.

ACC had now handed over the laptops to the police forensics for further investigation.
