Feydhoo constituency MP Alhan Fahmy who signed for pro-government Jumhoory Party yesterday has refuted claims that he had conditioned the creation of President and Vice President of the party, while stressing that he does not intend to contest for any position within the party this time. Speaking during the press conference following his signature to Jumhoory Party, Alhan detailed that although he would not be contesting for a prominent post within the party this time, he intends to work towards being in the leadership of the party in future.
He explained that the reason behind his decision not to contest for any post just yet was due to the fact that he had not served the party thus far.
âœI donâ™t intend to contest for the newly created posts this time. I believe that first I need to serve this party. The people need to see our sincere efforts in this party before they would be willing to vote for us in an election,â Alhan added during the ceremony held at Nalahiya Hotel yesterday.
Alhan further revealed that during the discussions with Jumhoory Party leader and Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim prior to signing for the party, he had requested Gasim not to make the party âœa political department of Villaâ and not to influence the functioning of the party.
He claimed that Gasim was ready to agree to the terms put forth by him and to that end, had even agreed to seek the presidential candidate of the party through a primary.
Jumhoory Party had created the posts of President, Vice President and Policy Secretary just as rumors of Alhan and former President of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) joining the party had been rife.
The party had opened the opportunity to apply for the three posts till May 10.
Though Alhan has stressed that he would not be contesting for any position within the party, Dr Didi is yet to make such a statement pertaining to his intentions to contest for a post in its leadership.
He claimed that he wished to serve the party in the broadest way possible.
Jumhoory Party leader Gasim detailed that the new posts had been created to further strengthen and enhance the party as the authority had been afforded to the leader by the basic regulation.
