The Criminal Court has extended the detention period of the former Deputy Home Minister Mohamed Mahir Esa by a further 10 days after he was arrested for allegedly inciting violence against the Police while delivering speeches at the Usfasgandu area. His period of detention had been extended as the earlier period expired on Sunday after being extended on July 25.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) stated today regarding the matter that Mahir’s detainment had been extended while relevant authorities are stating that there is no pressing need to keep him detained and to release him.
Mahir, while speaking at the Usfasgandu had said that the Police had toppled the government through a coup and that he would back the MDP to win back power till the last person left standing and that he would cross over Police barricades if he had to, and Police claim that he had incited violence against them.
MDP had also claimed that Mahir had been arrested in violation of the constitution and called for his immediate release. It was stated that him using the right to freedom of expression should not lead to his detainment which is deliberately stymieing his efforts to instill democracy in the country.
