Though the Parliament has been indefinitely suspended since Tuesday citing an unsafe and hazardous environment, Speaker Abdulla Shahid has decided to hold a session tomorrow. In a statement issued by the Parliament Secretariat detailed that as the Annex 1 and 2 of the legislation on general regulations that had been extended by the Parliament on December 13, 2011 is set to expire, tomorrow’s session would entail a decision on the report drafted by the regulations committee over the re-extension.
A letter sent to the MPs by the Speaker today stressed that the regulations are essential to the fundamental and civic rights of the people guaranteed by the constitution and are also integral to the procedures and policies required for the functioning of various government institutions.
“Speaker further said that the regulations are needed for maintaining law and order, the running of economic, social and education sectors and the functioning of political parties,†Parliament Secretariat’s statement read.
Shahid also stressed that if the period of implementation of the regulations is not extended it would compromise their legal stature and undermine several rights and benefits enjoyed under the constitution by the people. The failure to extend the period of regulation would also plunge the State into a legal limbo, Speaker’s letter to the MPs said.
State last Thursday had asked the Supreme Court to issue a temporary order to implement the existing regulations until the Parliament can decide on its extension. In addition, the Attorney General’s (AG) office is currently reviewing the 47 regulations in need of legal parenthood.
