Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) today said that the acts of aggression and violent conduct of Parliament members during the live telecast of the sessions were having an adverse effect on the audience and the society. In a statement expressing concern over the indefinite suspension of the Parliament, HRCM said that such violent behavior was undermining the rights of children and expressed disappointment over the acts. The statement also alleged that some MP had engaged in actions that violated the rights of fellow MPs, defamed the Speaker with uncivilized behavior and resorted to actions that were unacceptable by society.
HRCM also pointed out that MPs as representatives of the people are mandated to work in the best interest of the nation and its people and strive to maintain peace and harmony in the country. Hence the statement highlighted the significance of MPs exercising restraint and displaying prime examples of Islam and democracy even in the face of adversity.
The Commission further alleged that the rights of individuals are being violated as some had tried to spin the present political strife in the country to their own advantage. To that end, HRCM noted that accusations, violence and obscenities are being exchanged on the streets in public places even in the presence of children. HRCM urged against resorting to such acts and conduct.
HRCM also stressed that the present turmoil in the country can only be resolved through dialogue, and called on all relevant interlocutors to cooperate with the already initiated discussions.
