Bank statement of Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam has been revealed to the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) established to probe the events leading up to following the transfer of power on February 7. This is the first time a bank statement had been revealed to the commission. At the news conference held by CNI on Thursday, Commission’s Co-Chair and retired Singaporean Judge G.P Selvam said that Shiyam had told to the commission that he had no objection in revealing the bank statement. Hence Selvam said that the bank statement will be attached to the commission’s report to be published on August 30..
“Shiyam has no objection to publicizing the findings from the bank statement,†Selvam said.
He said that others had also agreed to share their bank statements with the commission but the commission has not yet received any. CNI member Dr Ibrahim Yasir stated that they had received the call logs needed by the commission but is facing difficulties in retrieving the required call records from the Telecommunications Authority.
CNI member Dr Ali Fawaz said that the Telecommunications Authority had extended cooperation to the commission.
He said that 269 people have already been interviewed while 16 interviews still remain.
Selvam said that the CNI report will be sent to the relevant authorities on August 29 and that the report will be made public on August 30.
He said that the commission will try to publish a report on which is agreeable by all five members of the commission..
In the last press conference held by the commission before the report is published, Selvam said that the commission will not specify whom to charge and that the commission cannot stop the Prosecutor General from prosecuting any individuals if it decides to do so.
“We are not carrying out a criminal investigation. We can’t for anyone to be prosecuted,†he said.
When asked by a reporter if the CNI investigation would consider the national harmony, Selvam said that it is not something that the commission has to do. He added that the Presidential decree which established the commission had assigned the CNI to investigate if the transfer of power on February 7 had been illegitimate and that the details of the findings would be included in the report.
“No identities will be protected. The report may not include all the 260 names, but no names would be omitted in the report for the sake of national security,†Selvam said.
Dr. Fawaz said that the CNI will only have one report and that the same report would be submitted to the authorities as well as be made public.
While some claim that the main reason for Nasheed’s downfall was the arrest and subsequent detention of Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed, when asked if his statement was taken, Selvam said that Judge Abdulla is not relevant to the CNI’s investigation.
