Nasheed to Police surrounded by supporters

Former President Mohamed Nasheed, accompanied by large numbers of his supporters, former cabinet members and Parliament members are en-route to the Police station. Though Nasheed has been summoned to the Police for the investigation into his alleged call for violence against the Police, MDP National Steering Committee had passed to prevent Nasheed from being taken to the Police station. Prior to the committee's decision, Nasheed told Haveeru on Monday that he would present himself at the police station to face the allegations.

Police had rescheduled the summoning to 2.00 this afternoon to oblige with the letter from Nasheed that it was inconvenient for him to be present at 10.00 this morning.

Supporters of Nasheed have clashed with Police in riot gear as the roads leading to the Police Headquarters near Republic Square have been blocked off. Police have stressed that only Nasheed and his lawyer would be allowed behind police lines, while protesters are struggling to follow the former President.

Police have also prevented opposition Raajje TV from moving past the barricades as it had been announced that Police would no longer cooperate with the station citing that it was reporting false and fabricated news about the Police.

Nasheed’s legal team and some MPs have insisted that the former President would only enter the Police station with journalists from Raajje TV. Following the refusal by Police, Nasheed is presently sitting on a bench at the Republic Square.

Speaking to reporters a member of the legal team Hisaan Hussain detailed that it had been extremely difficult for Nasheed to get to the station. But that Nasheed would not enter the station in the absence of a free media, referring to Raajje TV Hisaan added.
Close to 3.00 this afternoon Nasheed has finally entered the Police station along with his legal team, close aides and some journalists.
