Will take legal action if Nasheed fails to appear: Police

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that it will take the necessary legal action against anyone who refuses to present themselves and cooperate with the police in any investigation. Police stated this in a press statement made in response to the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) accusations that former President Mohamed Nasheed was being summoned to the Police to “make an attempt on his life.”

Though Nasheed has been summoned to the Police for the investigation into his alleged call for violence against the Police, MDP National Steering Committee had passed to prevent Nasheed from being taken to the Police station. Prior to the committee's decision, Nasheed told Haveeru on Monday that he would present himself at the police station to face the allegations.

Police stated that they have summoned Nasheed not to cause any bodily harm or make an attempt on his life but to clarify details about an ongoing investigation and to give him the opportunity to defend himself on the accusations and obtain his account of the incident.

“Maldives Police Service assures that all security and protection measures would be employed from the moment he arrives at the police,” police said.

Police detailed that several police officers and vehicles have been attacked since the dismantling of Usfasgandu on May 29, which had been issued to the MDP for its political activities. Police also stated that Nasheed is being summoned to police accused of being the instigator behind the violence.

Police also revealed that it had rescheduled the summoning to 2.00 this afternoon to oblige with the letter from Nasheed that it was inconvenient for him to be present at 10.00 this morning.

Police further said that the Police Integrity Commission, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and Maldivian Democracy Network have been invited to observe the questioning of Nasheed and added that Police Integrity Commission and HRCM had accepted the invitation.

“We assure all that anyone summoned to the Maldives Police Service, will be dealt with in accordance with the laws and regulations, in a way which would not violate any human rights and in accordance with the police code of conduct and the code of ethics.” Police statement read.

Nasheed had earlier stressed that he had never asked anyone to resort to violence or unrest and had added that the “allegations made by the Police are tainted with politics.”
