Nasheed cannot be taken to Police: MDP

Though former President Mohamed Nasheed has been summoned to the Police for the investigation into his alleged call for violence against the Police, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed to prevent Nasheed from being taken to the Police station. The decision was made by the MDP National Steering Committee after Nasheed was summoned to the Police at 10.00 tomorrow morning.

While the Committee has made the decision yesterday, Nasheed had earlier said that he would be present at the Police station to face the allegations.

The Committee comprising of Ministers of Nasheed’s government and Parliament members had alleged that Nasheed was being summoned to the Police to “make an attempt on his life.” MDP further stressed that the allegations against Nasheed is an attempt by the pro-government political parties to have him disqualified from the next presidential elections.

The Committee’s decision further alleged that Police had attacked Nasheed on two previous occasions which include the attack on the former President on February 8 and Police intentionally pepper spraying Nasheed in the face during a MDP “Direct Action” protest.

MDP had passed against Nasheed presenting himself at the Police station citing that any opportunity that potentially put the life of Nasheed at risk must be avoided.

Police have summoned Nasheed for the probe into the recorded phone call of the former President who is heard saying that he wishes to “deploy people to fight the police.”

The audio recording of the phone call between Nasheed and Machchangoalhi-north MP Mariya Ahmed Didi publicized by Police had been on May 29, at the time when Police were searching Usfasgandu area being used by MDP to hold its political activities.

During the three minute conversation, Mariya is heard informing Nasheed that Police were using pepper spray to disperse protesters and that a letter had been delivered asking to vacate the Usfasgandu area by 10.00 that night (May 29). She added that the scheduled MDP National Congress adjacent to the site could not be held due to a lack of quorum. Mariya also detailed that the area can only be vacated when given access by the Police and the refusal to do so was quite amusing. Then Mariya is heard asking Nasheed his opinion on the next course of action.

“What more can be done? I honestly don’t know what option remains in the matter?” Nasheed is heard saying.

Next Nasheed says “I think if we can find the people, to bring them out to fight.” In response Mariya questions “between both parties?”

“If we can find such people I feel we should deploy people to fight. To find a group from Male who are willing to fight and bring them out to fight the police” the former President says.

In response to a question from Haveeru in relation to the phone call, Nasheed had stressed that he had never asked anyone to resort to violence or unrest and had added that the “allegations made by the Police are tainted with politics.”
