Police today revealed that instead of answering the questions posed by the Police, former President Mohamed Nasheed had submitted a personal statement after he was summoned to the Police station yesterday afternoon. Police detailed that several police officers and vehicles have been attacked since the dismantling of Usfasgandu on May 29, while Nasheed had been summoned to police accused of being the instigator behind the violence.
Police also said that Nasheed had entered the Police station at 3.00 yesterday afternoon after spending a long time with his supporters at the Republic Square while the former President had been summoned at 2.00 yesterday. When the questioning began, Nasheed had expressed his wish to hear all the questions of the Police before he responded, Police said.
"But when the investigating team had started to ask questions, Nasheed had said that he wanted to submit a personal statement instead of verbal responses. Afterwards, while stressing that he wanted to cooperate with the Police investigation, refused to answer any questions stating that the Police had failed to specify the crime he had allegedly committed," a Police statement issued following Nasheed's questioning read.
According to Police, the investigating team had repeatedly informed the crime and legal article of the offense of the former President. But Nasheed had continued to say that the alleged offense was not clear, Police said.
Then Nasheed had written and signed a statement after consulting with his legal team and handed it to the investigating team, Police added.
However, Nasheed's legal team last night said that the Police could not specify the alleged crime committed by Nasheed.
One lawyer Hisaan Hussain revealed that the former President had repeatedly told the Police that though they had assured that he would get the opportunity to defend himself, he could only do so if he knew the crime that he had allegedly committed. Nasheed had repeatedly asked the Police to specify his alleged offense, Hisaan had said.
