Police Integrity Commission today said that use of excessive force by Police had not been observed during the ongoing opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protests. A statement issued after observing the protests from early July, said that Police had not addressed the protesters in an improper manner. However, the Commission noted that while taking protesters into custody, some officers occasionally used inappropriate language.
“The use of excessive force by Police when taking protesters into custody has not been observed. It has also been noted that most protesters arrested comply with the police,†the statement read.
Integrity Commission also pointed out that Police had broken up protests only after protesters removed police barricades and used loud speaker after midnight despite several warnings by police.
“The Commission also observed that protesters removed the barricades used to mark police lines and pelted the officers with coins, nuts, pavement bricks, marble, metal pieces, chili water and plastics water bottles,†statement said.
According to the statement, following a complaint that some police officers had been intoxicated during the MDP protest on June 11, 37 police officers had undergone breath analysis in the presence of a commission’s team. However, the test results showed that none of the police officers had been inebriated.
