Judge Saeed Ibrahim presiding over the corruption case of former Principal Collector of Customs Ibrahim Shafiu has said today that the witnesses presented by the State will be summoned to the next hearing of the case at the Criminal Court. The State filed a case against Shafiu accusing him of using his authority as a prominent official of Customs to withhold fining local sea Transportation Company Sultans of the Seas for altering the information of two speed boats imported to the country by the company, and also reducing the duty charges of the import for the company.
The charges were filed as “manipulating the powers of a responsible position to aid in the illegitimate benefit of a specific party.â€
During the previous hearing the State had presented several evidences against Shafiu amongst which includes testimonies from several employees of the Maldives Customs Service.
The State attorney at today’s hearing noted that the boats were imported in to the country before Shafiu was assigned to the position, but that an order was issued to fine the company after he was assigned to the position, and that it was on his order the company was not fined and the duty charges reduced.
The company in question, Sultans of the Seas is of family interest of the leader of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ahmed Thasmeen Ali.
The State had also filed another case against Shafiu accusing him of reducing the duty charge of a crane imported by Centre Enterprises in violation of regulations. Shafiu has however denied both charges.
