Pro-government Jumhoory Party leader and Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim has alleged that the events of February 7 was former President Mohamed Nasheed's "own doing" and had resigned after he realized that he could no longer remain in power. Speaking during the ceremony held at Traders Hotel today following the signing of former President of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Dr Ibrahim Didi and Vice President and Feydhoo constituency MP Alhan Fahmy to Jumhoory Party, Gasim claimed that the âœmembers of the security forces had refused to obey orders of the former President.â
âœIf that can be declared as a coup, then it shall be so,â Gasim added.
The security forces had refused to obey former President Nasheed as he had issued illegal orders, he claimed.
âœIllegitimate orders were given by Nasheed to the security forces. He arrested and detained people against the constitution and refused to release them,â Gasim alleged.
The Jumhoory Party leader further claimed that Nasheed had resigned after realizing that he could not remain in power, but alleged that the former President was now attempting to deceive and âœpoisonâ the people.
During the ceremony today, Alhan also stressed that February 7 was not a âœcoupâ while Dr Didi had said that it could not be determined whether February 7 was in fact a âœcoupâ.
However, both Alhan and Didi before the fallout with MDP had been adamant that the present government had seized power through a â˜coup detatâ™.
