Government does not wish to revise the Inquiry Commission: Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has alleged that despite President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik's claims that the composition of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) set up to probe the transfer of power would revised by mid June, the government did not wish to do so. In response to a question from reporter after casting his ballot in the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) general elections today, Nasheed detailed that though President Waheed had claimed that the CNI would be recomposed, his successor had failed to do so even when the 15th of the month had already passed.

He further claimed that he was unaware that the present three members of the Commission, Dr Ibrahim Yasir, Dr Ali Fawaz Shareef and Ismail Shafeeu would be retained after the composition is revised.

President Waheed last week stressed that all three members would remain in the Commission even after it is recomposed.

Nasheed further expressed concern for the delay in revising the Commission.

He detailed that he had heard that the original deadline given for the CNI to complete its probe was by May 31.

“The failure to revise the CNI was due to the deliberate intentions of government to do so. The biggest disappointment is that, I think CMAG (Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group) would convene next Wednesday. But the government has failed to comply with CMAG’s call to recompose the Commission although the deadline had been extended,” he detailed.

Nasheed stressed that CMAG had given four weeks for the government to revise the CNI to make it acceptable by all interlocutors. But though the four weeks expired on May 17 and an additional two more weeks had been given, the government has yet to change the composition of the Commission.

The former President alleged that the conclusions reached by Ismail Shafeeu clearly showed that his government had been ousted in a “coup.”

“That is clearly evident from Ismail Shafeeu’s Commission. As far as I can see, if the outcome is not a consensus on holding early elections after CMAG convenes with the current information at hand, the people would be adversely affected,” Nasheed added.
