Jumhoory Party postpones MPs crossover ceremony

Pro-government Jumhoory Party has postponed the ceremony scheduled for today, where it claimed more members of Parliament would be signing for the party. Spokesperson Moosa Rameez claimed that the ceremony had been postponed as some other MPs also wish to crossover to the party.

“We have delayed the ceremony so as to complete the process of the signings at one go,” Rameez added.

Haveeru has learned that one of the reasons the ceremony had been put off is as some legislators scheduled to sign for Jumhoory Party today are not in the country at present.

In a ceremony held after the submission of 1,000 new JP membership forms to the Elections Commission (EC) last Thursday, JP Registrar General Mohamed ‘Inthi’ Imthiyaz said that many MPs will sign for JP on Saturday.

“In July, JP will hold a huge ceremony at the artificial beach like never before in the history of Maldives” Inthi had said.

JP now has about 6000 members. Yet the party is trying to increase the number to 30,000 before the upcoming presidential elections in 2013.

Inthi had said that the biggest setback to increase the amount of their members is due to the slow processing speed of membership from the Elections Commission.

He added that apart from the 1,000 forms submitted Thursday, 500 forms previously submitted had not been processed yet.
