Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) today commenced its general elections to elect a Presidential candidate, Chairperson and members to some other positions. MDP official stated that the polls have been open since 9.00 this morning, although some administrative setbacks have delayed the process in few locations, election will be held in all the inhabited islands.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed was the only person to compete for the position of Presidential candidate. MDP interim Chairperson, Hulhu-Henveiru MP Moosa â˜Reekoâ™ Manik competes for the position of MDP Chairperson while Seenu Maradhoo, Alanaasige, Ali Shiyam competes for the position of Deputy Chairperson.
MDP basic regulation states that if only one candidate competes for a post, the person must attain 10 percent support from the 48,000 members to get elected for the position.
MDP conducts its polls at the Male City Hall, former Male English School (MES) and former MDP camp at Ameenee magu.
High level MDP officials had voted as the polls opened this morning, including cabinet ministers of former President Nasheedâ™s administration.
Presidential candidate, chairperson, deputy chairperson, many atoll constituency Presidents and Secretaries will be elected in todayâ™s elections.
MDP informed that the voting will be closed and vote counting will commence at 4.00 in the evening, and that the result of each ballot box will be announced at its location.
