Jumhoory Party to appoint President, Vice President

Jumhoory Party's Council has decided to appoint a President and Vice President to the party. Registrar General Mohamed ‘Inthi’ Imthiyaz said Thursday that during the Council meeting last night, the party’s basic regulation had been amended to facilitate the posts of President and VP.

In addition to the two posts, the decision had been made to open applications for the posts of Secretary General and Political Secretary for a period of seven days, Inthi added.

He further said though the posts of the President and Vice President had been created, the post of the leader of Jumhoory Party would remain, including the position of deputy leader.

Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim is the present leader of the party.

While Jumhoory Party has decided to create the posts of President and Vice President, rumors are rife that the deposed President and Vice President of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Dr Ibrahim Didi and Feydhoo constituency MP Alhan Fahmy are set to crossover to Jumhoory Party.

Some members of Jumhoory Party have also claimed that the condition of the move from MDP is to give Didi and Alhan the posts of President and VP of Jumhoory Party respectively.

Inthi revealed that the members who apply for the posts would be appointed by a secret ballot of the Council and added that the positions would remain until the party’s National Congress convenes in July.

“If the posts need revising it would be decided by the Congress. Hence, the positions would remain until the Congress declares otherwise,” he said.

During the Council meeting last night, former Fisheries State Minister Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan was appointed as the deputy leader of Jumhoory Party by an 18 member majority.

Dr Hussain Rasheed had been integral during the inception of Jumhoory Party but had later defected to MDP.
